Cataracts (Cataract Surgery)

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are artificial devices used in the treatment of cataracts. They are artificial lenses that are implanted into the eyes to replace the natural lens after cataract surgery. IOLs (including mono- vision (Acrysof and Eyehance) , astigmatism correcting lens (toric), and multifocal lens implants (Panoptix, Vivity,  Synergy and Symfony) are designed to focus light like the natural lens and reduce your dependence on glasses and contact lenses. If you are a candidate for cataract surgery, our doctors and our staff will help you determine which option is best suited to your needs. Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis in Salinas or Monterey.

Monterey County Eye Associates has performed cataract surgery for many patients in Monterey, Salinas, King City, and surrounding communities with consistently excellent results. Contact our office if you would like to learn more about how we can restore clarity to your vision.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a common age-related vision problem caused by the hardening of the eye’s lens. Since this hardening decreases the eye’s ability to focus on up-close objects, presbyopia is sometimes referred to as age-related farsightedness. Presbyopia should not be confused with hyperopia, since the latter is caused by flaws in the shape of the cornea.

Presbyopia Treatment Options

Treatment of presbyopia depends on the severity of the problem and on the patient’s age and overall health. Eyeglasses and contact lenses (including bifocals) are the least invasive option, while IOLs may be an option for those wishing to avoid the daily hassle of wearing glasses and contacts. Monovision LASIK surgery treats presbyopia by improving close vision in one eye and distance vision in the other.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a progressive eye disease caused by flaws in the eye’s drainage system. Fluids accumulate, causing intraocular pressure (IOP) to build. Over time, elevated IOP places pressure on the optic nerve, which can cause blindness if left untreated. Although glaucoma is not preventable, it can be managed clinically with medicines and laser surgery. Please contact Monterey County Eye Associates for further information about how we can help glaucoma sufferers.

Glaucoma Symptoms

Glaucoma is often asymptomatic in its earliest stages, so it is important for persons at risk for glaucoma (including men and patients with a family history of the disease) to have regular check-ups. If you experience any of the following symptoms, or if you are at risk for glaucoma, contact our office as soon as possible to schedule a glaucoma exam.

  • Cloudy vision
  • Haloed vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Excessive blinking or tearing
  • Crossed / enlarged eyes
  • Decreased vision
  • Nausea or headaches

Contact Monterey County Eye Associates to schedule a glaucoma evaluation. We serve Monterey, Salinas, King City, and surrounding areas.

Comprehensive Eye Exams

Comprehensive eye exams are essential to detecting eye problems, including dry eyes, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, presbyopia, in their earliest stages, when treatment is most effective. Contact Monterey County Eye Associates to schedule a comprehensive eye exam.

Refractive Surgery

Refractive surgery treats problems caused by a misshaped cornea, including myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Depending on the structure of the patient’s eye, the problem to be addressed, and the medical history of the patient, surgeries including LASIK and AK may offer the best chance of good results and minimal side effects. Implantable contact lenses are also a treatment option for myopia.

LASIK

LASIK laser surgery involves the reshaping of the cornea through the use of a special ophthalmologic laser. The surgery typically yields outstanding results, with many patients experiencing dramatically improved vision.

AK (Astigmatic Keratotomy)

AK surgery, or astigmatic keratotomy, treats astigmatism (which occurs when the cornea is irregularly shaped). AK involves the creation of tiny, precise slits in the cornea to flatten and reshape it.
