Types of Retinal Conditions
Problems with the retina can directly affect your vision because the retina is responsible for sending visual signals to the brain. When the retina is damaged or does not function properly, vision may be impaired or completely lost. Treating retinal conditions as early as possible is the best way to protect vision or slow the progression of certain conditions. Our team of doctors at Monterey County Eye Associates offers treatment for the different types of retinal conditions. If you live in or around Monterey, CA and are experiencing any of the following retinal conditions or other visual problems, we encourage you to schedule a consultation today.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a condition in which the blood vessels within the retina become damaged as a result of high glucose levels caused by diabetes. Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy include problems with peripheral vision, dark spots, blurred vision, and seeing flashing lights. Some may feel pain or pressure in the eyes. Diabetic retinopathy can lead to permanent loss of vision if left untreated.
Retinal Detachment
Retinal detachment is a serious condition in which the retina pulls away from its proper position and requires immediate emergency treatment. Without immediate attention, retinal detachment can lead to permanent loss of vision. Some causes of retinal detachment include diabetes, injury, and a sagging vitreous, which is the material that fills the inside of the eyes. Symptoms of retinal detachment include seeing flashes of light, the sudden appearance of floaters, blurred vision, and a shadow over the field of vision.
Retinal Tears
Retinal tears are similar to retinal detachment but differ in that the retina is not fully separated from the eye. Retinal tears can lead to retinal detachment if left untreated. Retinal tears can occur when the vitreous within the eye separates from the retina. This is generally age-related, which is why retinal tears are more likely to happen to those who are over 50. Symptoms include seeing floaters or flashes of light.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a condition in which the center portion of the retina, called the macula, deteriorates. Macular degeneration is commonly age-related and often begins as a dark, blurry spot in the center of the field of vision. As macular degeneration progresses, the spot may become darker and more blurry. Some may develop a blind spot where it once was blurry while others may notice a change in color perception.
Macular Holes
A macular hole can develop as a part of the aging process. A macular hole is a small hole in the macula. It may also be a tear within the macula. The symptoms of macular holes include blurred vision in the center of the field of vision or objects looking wavy.
